We found the wreck … and Timmy got a medal!

June 16, 2015, on the exact 73rd anniversary of the event, in the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta,
Minister of Justice, Culture and Local Government of the Republic of Malta Owen Bonnici, and Head
of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression, Jan Stanislaw Ciechanowski, unveiled a
plaque commemorating the 13 fallen Polish seamen from the escort destroyer ORP “Kujawiak”.

During the ceremony Jan Stanislaw Ciechanowski said:

I would like to […] sincerely thank the Polish Shipwreck Expedition Association for finding the wreck of the ORP Kujawiak. It is a great achievement and so important for our national memory. Thank you also to all Maltese friends who contributed to this. May the memory of the heroic defenders of Malta, primarily for the civilian population, which suffered so much, never fade away!

PAt the end of the ceremony, Dr. Timmy Gambin from the University of Malta (friend and member of our
expedition), at the request of the Association was awarded the badge “Distinguished for Polish Culture”
by JS Ciechanowskie. This badge is awarded to outstanding individuals in the creation, dissemination
and protection of culture.
